Tommy Roe, est né le 9 mai 1942 à Atlanta en Georgie. Pendant ses études,Tommy avait du talent autant pour la peinture que pour la musique. Malgré les encouragements de ses professeurs, il n'entra pas aux Beaux-Arts, et préféra en 1958 devenir le chanteur du groupe The Satins. C'est avec ce groupe qu'il enregistra en 1960, une première version de la chanson "Sheila", pour une petite compagnie de disques, Judd, mais sans succès. En 1962, il enregistre à nouveau la chanson "Sheila", qui devient son premier grand succès et lui rapporta un disque d'or, suivi en 1963 de "The Folk Singer" et de "Everybody". Par la suite, il disparaît pour connaître en 1969 un retour en force avec la chanson "Dizzy", qui figure sur tous les palmarès.
