Otis Ray Redding, né le 9 septembre 1941 à Dawson (Géorgie), il est décédé le 10 décembre 1967 dans un accident d’avion dans le lac Monona (Wisconsin), alors qu'il était en approche de l'aéroport de Madison. L'avion qui venait de Cleveland avait également à bord les membres des The Bar-Kays. Le musicien Ben Cauley est le seul survivant. De nombreux tubes sortent après sa mort, comme Match Game et The Dock of the Bay, qu'il n'a pas pu achever, le sifflotement sur la fin de la chanson occupant la place d'un dernier couplet qu'il n'avait pas encore écrit.
