Stevie Wonder, de son vrai nom Steve Hardaway, est né en 1951 à Saginaw, dans le Michigan (U.S.A). Aveugle depuis sa naissance, il commença dès l'âge de 5 ans à jouer du piano et de l'harmonica. À 11 ans, il se produisait déjà sur une scène dans le Quartier Latin de Détroit. Son spectacle était très varié: Steve chantait, jouait de l'harmonica, du piano, de l'orgue, des bongos et de la batterie. Ronnie White, l'un des chanteurs du groupe The Miracles, fut tellement impressionné par les dons de Stevie Wonder qu'il le présenta à Brian Holland, directeur artistique et compositeur pour Tamla Motown, qui lui signa immédiatement un contrat. Son premier disque, "A Call It Pretty Music", ne connut qu'un succès relatif, mais le second, "Fingertips" en 1963, fut l'un des hits les plus populaires de l'année aux États-Unis. Par la suite, il connaît plusieurs succès durant sa carrière comme: Work Out Stevie, Work Out (1963), Hey Harmonica Man (1964), High Hell Sneekers (1965), Blowing In The Wind (1966) et I Was Made To Love You (1967).
