James Brown est né le 3 mai 1933 à Pulaski, dans le Tennessee, mais il passa sa jeunesse à Atlanta en Georgie, où il travaille comme cireur de chaussures. Par la suite à Mancon, où il rencontre Beau-Jack, un ex-champion de boxe. Impressionné par les aptitudes que James Brown montre pour la boxe, et en particulier par son extraordinaire jeu de jambes. Il décide de prendre James sous sa tutelle, l'entraîne pendant plusieurs années, et lui conseille de devenir professionnel. Mais il est victime d'un accident, une blessure à la jambe qui lui interdit la pratique sportive. Il se tourne alors vers le chant, et il forme un groupe vocal "Les Famous Flames". En 1956, le groupe passe une audition pour une station de radio. James porte l'enregistrement de cette audition à un disc-jockey de ses amis qui le passe en ondes. Devant le succès obtenu auprès des auditeurs, le disc-jockey téléphone à Syd Nathan, le directeur des disques King de Cincinnati. James Brown signe un contrat avec la maison King. Le 4 février 1956, il enregistre sa première chanson "Please, please, please". Deux jours après le disque sort sur le marché, et c'est un véritable succès James brown en vendra plus d'un million d'exemplaires.
